Isaac was old and pretty much blind. And his own wife helped their son Jacob deceive him. I do not doubt that ultimately it was God’s intent that Jacob received Isaac’s blessing and eventually became the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. I also do not doubt that the Old Testament is full of stories, not of perfect human heroes, but of broken humans being used by God in spite of their brokenness. God worked through the deceitfulness of Jacob and Rebekkah, but God could have also seen to it that Jacob was blessed without it.
Might points are these. If you are feel like Jacob in this story, having to deceive someone to get what you believe was promised to you….stop. Have faith that God will see that you get what you need. If you are Isaac in this story, and you are befuddled by the current generation of students, so much so that you feel you cannot relate anymore with the technological natives you are teaching, get some help. Ask someone you trust to help you understand their needs and desires so they won’t feel like they have to game your system to get them.
