Genesis 4 – Am I my Band Students’ Keeper?

You are! When they are in your classroom and maybe even as long as they are part of your program, for them you are responsible. The teacher-student relationship is different from the biblical story of the two brothers. You are not in competition with your students for the approval of others. Rather, you are working with your students to foster their musical, emotional, and personal growth. They might not realize you are partners in that work until years later. Nevertheless, consider your job a calling for which you have been equipped, the main purpose of which is for you to mentor, guide, lead, encourage, and challenge your students to become the best versions of themselves, the individuals they were created to be. And remember, you are blessed to use music as the means through which to build up your students. It fosters connection and relationship that are harder to cultivate in classes in which students succeed or fail on their own.
