Genesis 14 – You are not alone

The story of Lot’s rescue during wartime is not told from his perspective nor from Abram’s. It is a simple narrative with no dialogue. Synopsis: Lot gets captured as part of the spoils of war, Abram finds out and takes his men to save Lot. When someone close to us finds out we are in trouble, they come to help.

You may not have many colleagues who would run to battle to rescue you. What you do have are colleagues who have been through what is currently frustrating you. You are not the first person to experience whatever problem you are facing (how to deal with a disruptive student; how to pick music for festival; whether or not to take on extra work; balancing family and marching band; having a terrible rehearsal; the name of the best local instrument repair shop). Ask for help! It is perhaps the easiest and hardest thing to do. My pride gets in the way. I don’t want my colleagues to know I don’t have it all together (kind of like how we act in church isn’t it?). But asking for help almost always results in responses from people who have made the same mistakes you have, or who have gone through similar challenges, because nobody has it all together. And I’ve never had anyone respond to a request for help by saying, “Help yourself! Don’t you know anything?” People like that are not on the same email or facebook strings that I frequent!

And if you are a believer, do not forget that even though Jesus was never a band director, his power and wisdom and willingness to save you are endless. Talk to him first!
